Galapagos Day 2

Today was full of water-based activities near Isla Floreana in the Galapagos.  

We started the day with a scenic tour on the zodiacs.  We saw lots of frolicking sea lions, lots of blue-footed boobies, many iguanas, and several other notable birds.








After a break we headed into a sandy beach, where we all practiced our snorkeling.  Roberto wanted to test us in a gradual way to see if we would be skilled enough for later activities.  Cheryl and another traveller were able to see a couple of Galapagos sea turtles as well as many marvelous fish.





After lunch, about half the group had another snorkeling expedition.  The spot was a lot more rocky, so the water was much clearer.  We got VERY close to many frolicking sea lions, and also saw tons of cool fish, and even a few birds. My camera wasn’t working underwater - so this photo is from one of the other travellers, Carla.



We returned to the ship and regrouped - then the whole group went to Cormorant Beach for a walk (again Roberto was testing us to see how we did in rough terrain.). We saw some gorgeous flamingos, as well as a bunch of lizards and a few other birds, and many bright red crabs.

We got back to the ship at dusk, bathed and hydrated, and regrouped for the port talk.  We also met the crew and had our official welcome (We arrived too late for this last night).  A delicious dinner and then a relaxing evening in anticipation of an early start tomorrow.

Galapagos Day 4:San Cristobal Island

​ Today was our last day in Galapagos, and we spent all of it in and around San Cristobal Island.   We started the day at 7 am with our ship going twice around Kicker Island - a strange and beautiful rock formation off the coast.  We took lots of pictures and enjoyed learning about the different ways that volcanic rock erodes. After breakfast we went on a ride in the zodiacs to look at some of the other geologic features around Wizards point.  The surf was quite rough, but the skilled drivers were able to get us very close to the various caves and coves - including the spectacular "Cathedral." It was fascinating to ride the swells and watch the crashing waves. We also went thru an arch along with several pelicans. We had some time to relax before lunch, and also visited the bridge on the ship to watch the Captain steering and learn more about driving it. Interestingly every member of the 7 person crew knows how to drive the boat and take turns relieving the captain....

Exploring the Amalfi Coast - Charming Towns and Specialties of EAT-aly

  Pozzouli Pozzuoli was our first experience of small towns near Naples.  After our tour took us to Roman ruins, we had time to explore the town - which was full of families enjoying the holiday, visiting the skating rink and the Christmas craft market and enjoying the view of the bay. The narrow streets had a lot of arches, designed to keep the build in g s standing in an earthquake. We took a walk with the guides to visit Rione Terra, a hilltop neighborhood that had been partially destroyed by an earthquake 40 years ago. The city was encouraging rebuilding. turning it into a high end residential and shopping. It was interesting to see the juxtaposition of modern high end shops and apartments with ancient buildings underneath.    A Day in the Life in Pozzouli Outside of the town of Pozzuoli, we visited a small family-owned vineyard and agribusiness.
