Greece Day 1 & 2: Athens

We arrived in Greece in the afternoon.  After a nap, we enjoyed baked goods from our host, and explored the neighborhood a bit.  Then had an early night.

On Tuesday, we had a leisurely morning around our guest house.  We had a wonderful breakfast with fluffy omelette and delicious creamy Greek yogurt.  All’s right with the world.

In the afternoon we ventured out to visit the National Archaeological Museum.  The museum was huge and fascinating.  Because of the crowds, the staff recommended we go backwards, so we started with lots and lots of funerary stelae - very interesting and new for us.

We then focused on the most famous artifacts - to make sure we saw them before our backs wore out.  We saw the famous bronze statue of Zeus, about 460 BC

The Akrotiri frescoes, Cycladic art from about 1600 BC

The bronze collection from about 1600 BC

The Mycenaean tombs exhibition. 14-15th century BC.

In the evening, we met up with Cheryl’s friend Dennis for excellent Vietnamese food.
