We had a delightful time in Chobe. Our camp had a spectacular view of a huge plain full of wild animals (and some Namibian cows). The only internet at camp was in the main area, and we had long days full of game drives - so we are a little delayed in the blog posting.
After settling to camp, we went out for a sundowners drive on the plain. It was lovely seeing so many animals - herds of antelope, zebra, waterbuck etc. all just grazing happily. There were also lots of cool large birds, yellow billed and open-bill storks, egrets, herons, lapwings, stilts, spoonbills, ibis geese, and more. Wow!
The next morning we set out on our first game drive. The highlight of the morning was seeing a huge herd of sable antelopes, as well as a very charming family of elephants.
In the afternoon, we did a really quick tour of the park so we could get out before night fall. We saw several lilac-breasted rollers as well as carmine bee eaters. We were temporarily surrounded by a huge herd of Cape Buffalo heading to the river for an evening drink. We also saw a small group of lions who joined us in watching the sun go
down.
Our last day at Baobab camp, we had an all day game drive. It was a long day, but we saw some amazing animals. The highlights were watching a big herd of elephants coming down for a noon-time drink, and then a pair of hippos frolicking in the background. We also saw a giraffe playing lookout for a big herd of zebra on a huge flood plain around the Chobe River.
In the evening we had a really fun cultural night where the staff sang a number of songs for us. The Botswanas seem to be naturally talented in layered harmonies. It was lovely.
